‘Fatal accident on the road’: driver injured in road rage incident

An accident involving a motorcyclist and a passing vehicle on the A51 closed the northbound lane of the A91 motorway for about two hours on Tuesday night and left the driver of a vehicle in the road injured, police said.

The accident happened just after 8:30pm when the motorcycle driver, aged in his 50s, was heading northbound on the southbound lanes of the motorway and passed the motorcyclists vehicle.

It then became an argument and the motorcycle crashed into the rear of the vehicle.

The motorcyclism then struck the front of the van, causing it to spin, police say.

The driver of the motorcycle suffered minor injuries and was taken to St James’ Hospital.

The van driver, a 44-year-old from Galway, was taken into custody for questioning and is due to appear in Galway District Court on Wednesday morning.

The collision is the second fatal incident on the motorways A51 and A91 on Monday night.

The road was reopened for two hours later and the two-way traffic was re-opened on Tuesday afternoon.
